Back to the Basics - Beauty Edition

Maybe it’s NOT Maybelline. Maybe you were just born with it.
-A fabulous woman

After being inspired by my girl crush Alicia Keys to get back to the basics I decided it was time to cut the concealer and shoot with the bare-minimum. Luckily, my friend Bradly Wittke loves shooting in the outdoors as much as I do. So, we took advantage of a sunny Silicon Valley afternoon and shoot some fall looks. While we kept this look simple it was to allows some of my favorite beauty products to shine! And on that note, I hope you enjoy a quick hit-list of my top three beauty favs!

#1.  Boots #7 Protect and Perfect Serum- Now, If you haven't already heard about the latest UK craze allow me to introduce to Boots #7 Protect and Perfect Serum.  It's pretty much my current skin obsession and for less then $30.00 at your local Target you don't have to travel overseas to snag this secret. Apply this morning and evening and within three weeks you'll notice fine lines smoothing and fuller skin. It's pretty much an instant dream-in-a-bottle!

#2. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer- This is my current go-to. I'll wear this product for over 12 hours. In fact- after a few too many champagnes I've even slept in it. It keeps my giddy so I had to share the joy!

#3. 100% Pure Organic Mint Lip Balm- The best $7 you will spend on your lips this year! 100% Pure products are amazing because they are a completely additive free and vegan line. Not to mention that at this price point there is no excuse to ditch the generic brand.

Product Shots

Playing with make-up is like playing dress up, and we love that! However (and please pardon the cheesy advice about to come your way) you are naturally beautiful when you are naturally yourself! So don't be afraid to explore the "less is more" motto! Xoxo

Eat, sleep, denim, repeat.

Denim, like summer, is a state of mind.

Elton John sang about it, and it can bring back that feeling of breaking middle school dress code. Up until recently, fashionistas may have told you to beware of the Canadian tuxedo. But we at Legally Blonde and Brunette are saying "ditch the rules" and bring on the denim!

Chambray button-ups are one of my all time favorites. If Casual Friday's meet Kate Moss circa 2007. It's edgy but still enough fabric to keep you looking appropriate at work.

In this look I am wearing my favorite pair of Sevens. Like Shelley, they have been with me for years and go great in any social situation. This chambray is a simple staple piece from Gap that is a seamless transition from summer to fall pieces.

So as the days begin to get shorter, and Walgreens starts stocking up on the Halloween candy, do yourself a favor and double down on some denim!

The Clothes Made Me Do It

The world of fitness can be down right intimidating. And the over saturation of gym ads and plus yogies on Instagram can make it easy to bury your head in the sand (or a mimosa) and just never start.

But there's help! A recent study showed that women who owned work out
clothes that made them feel attractive actually became more active!

Which is why we recommend finding your personal active-wear style and rocking it. From an off the shoulder rocker tee to the newest and brightest Lululemons, find the style that makes you smile and want to kick ass. I love pastels and colors that make me smile. Shelley on the other hand has the cutest freaking sports bras that instantly make me want to take a
kickboxing class.

Whatever your style is, embrace it! Ultimately investing in your
health is one of the best purchases you can make!

As a single lady myself, I am not going to sit here and tell you that Valentines day is my favorite holiday, but it also doesn't have to totally suck either!! Instead of locking yourself in your room and binging on Netflix, get a group together and plan a fun night out, splurge on yourself and enjoy celebrating your friendships! You don't need a date to go buy a cute outfit for this Vday. Treat yourself to something special this year and embrace these precious years of freedom.

Shelley Buckner

If you are planning a special night with the boo, then why not try out a new look this year? This Valentines Day we feel love is in the hair. Channel your inner freepeople goddess and turn on the romantic flair with some curls and boho braids.

The Beauty of Always Accessorizing!

With the new year ahead we wanted to give you a run down of some accessories we are LOVING this January. If you didn't receive a pair of over-the-knee boot socks in your stocking this year consider yourself the anomaly. They were the rage this season, and we have a funny feeling this trend will easily be carried into spring. We approve. We also love how easily they spice up any simple outfit. Here I am even sporting a pair at the Miss California USA rehearsal just last month.

Legally Blonde and Brunette

Late night parties making those early mornings at work a little tough? Not to worry, we have just the hat for you! Felt fedoras are a great fashion staple. They can take you from day to night, and are our secret to even over coming a bad hair day.

Legally Blonde and Brunette

We get it, post holiday depression is real. So whats not to love about a big knit sweater to crawl into? Seeing as we live in California we opted for a fun sleeveless version here.

Legally Blonde and Brunette

So don't fret those January blues, smile because of the little things! Like accessories.

Happy New Year!

XOXO, Legally Blonde and Brunette

For the Love of Layering

Winter is the season of family, love, and layering. With the weather being a little ADD this week we decided to bring out some helpful tips for making an outfit a little more interesting, while still keeping you warm (when needed).

Tip #1. When wearing layers, incorporate a variety of patterns and prints. This will give your outfit more dimension but also make it more fun to look at. Here we paired this leopard print sweater from Gap with a classic American Appeal polo.

Winter Outfit

Tip #2. Start with the basics! If you're a white t-shirt and jeans kind-of-gal then start there- every Picasso had a blank canvas at one point.

Tip #3. Don't be afraid to play with texture. I realize wearing shorts in the fall may seem counter-season sensitive. However, its was 85 degrees in West Hollywood this weekend! So, every rule has some exceptions. But back to the point, we loved how these pin-stripped cut off shorts added the right amount of texture.

Fall Outfit

Tip #4. Have fun! In this look I decide to wear my favorite Vans sneakers, however this outfit would work well with a pair of fringe ankle boots or even a low cut cow boot.

Don't Fear the Fall

Fall Fashion

This past weekend we had to set our clocks back one hour and all risk arriving an hour early to brunch on Sunday morning. This shift in time also meant an official shift in seasons. If you're anything like me, change is something not to be taken lightly. To help this shift of season I've complied just a few reasons to not fear the Fall!

Reason 1: The Poncho. Why you may ask why is this piece everything? Because, it LITERALLY is everything. For the times you get sick of wearing coats or sweaters this versatile piece will keep you warm and while adding variety to your wardrobe. It's also highly convenient that shops from Forever 21 to Bloomingdales will be carrying this piece, the one I'm wearing here is from good ol' Urban Outfitters.

Reason 2: The Over-the-Knee flat boots. A few years ago Stuart Wiseman introduced us to the greatness that is the quintessential Over the Knee Boot. Since then, a new door has been opened to wear dresses and leggings in the winter. These boots are perfect with short skirts and long jackets and go great with bucket bags or a simple clutch for a night out. Featured  are flat leather boots by Chinese Laundry.

With the holidays rapidly approaching we hope this give you some inspiration to get out and dress out!

5 Signs It's Time to Dump Your Job

Fall Fashion

We've all had a case of the Monday blues. But it's another thing when those blues become your soundtrack. If you can relate to one or more of the below then maybe it's not you, it may be your job, and it just might be time to tell your job... Bye Felicia!

1.  No-Make-Up-Monday has become every day. Believe me, I love a break from getting dressed up, but there is also a sense of pride attached to how we present ourselves. We should want to look and feel our best at work. If you've lost the motivation to feel good at your workplace, then it might be time to pay yourself some TLC and move.

2. Your bosses party more than you do. It's funny when your co-worker is recovering from a crazy night out with a hangover cheeseburger in the office, but it's not funny when it affects your job. If your boss is the one setting this "short-hair-don't-care" attitude, how do they expect you to transcend it? Time to say BUH-BYE.

3. You feel unfulfilled for a prolonged period of time. We all have boring days at work or assignments that we are uninterested in, but if you find that you are unfulfilled by you work every day then it may be time to reassess  you career path or at least your current job.

4. All you talk about on your Hinge date is your job. While there is something to be said about being involved in your job you also need a healthy work-life balance. If work is the only thing that seems to be consuming your mind it might be time to start prioritizing some hobbies.

5. You're experiencing any sort of sketchy behavior. If you think something is sketchy at your office then there's a big chance it is, and where there is smoke there is fire. There's no room for harassment or illegal activities in a young professional's life. Code red, abort mission ASAP.

Remember, at the end of the day this is YOUR life, make sure you are doing something that makes you happy!!

Weekend Vibes

Nasty Gal Bad to the bone body suit

It's a bird, it's a plane! Naw it's just the first day of Fall. That's right, September 23rd marks the official first day of fall! So for all of you not struggling through this Los Angeles heat wave, we say put away those tank tops and get ready to break out those sweaters and jackets!

In Shelley's outfit we're trading in summer floral's for some edgy fringe in this stunning vegan leather jacket by BLANKNYC  and bad to the bone body suit by NASTY GAL . Ashley is mixing metals by pairing this silver chain fringe statement choker with the gold heals to embrace the spectrum of Fall colors. Of course we couldn't live with out a lil pop of color so please pay Shelley's red bottoms the attention they deserve, as it's not every day once gets to sport these iconic heals!

Fall Is Coming

Fall is coming! Cue the boots, hats, and jackets!! I have so been looking forward to Fall, not just for the cooler weather, but the the FASHION!! I'm a bit of a boot-a-holic so Fall/Winter time is my absolute favorite because I get to pull out all my favorite boots, jackets, and can wear some of my favorite hats once again. That being said, I live in LA and we have been having the worst heatwave, even so I am tempted to just rock my favorite Fall looks anyways. Here's to shorter days, cooler weather, and boots galore!

Look New in Blue

As the days get shorter our sleeves are getting longer! One of my favorite fall pieces this season is the sleeved maxi dress. I love simple solids so I chose to buy this Nordstrom Splendid piece in navy, this way I can dress it up or down with accessories. Tie this casual look together with a denim button up (this one by Gap) and top it off some shades and you're good to go!

The 5 Friends You Need to Fire

Friends You Need To Fire

We all have those friends that we have put up with for years because we went to high school or college with them, but as we get older and and our free time becomes more valuable, it's time to reassess who you are letting into your life and spending your precious energy on. It may indeed be time to fire some people from your life. The people you surround yourself with have a definite impact on you, make sure you're surrounding yourself with friends who build you up, truly support you, and care about your well being.

1. The Gossip Queen. Most of us women are all tempted by gossip. There is something so seductive and exciting about hearing juicy or scandalous news about someone you know. The next time you find yourself engaging in gossip think to yourself, how would you feel if the shoe was on the other foot. Would you want your closest friends speaking badly or gossiping about you behind your back? This is where the golden rule truly comes into play. Do not give into this dirty little habit, be the woman who refuses to engage in mindless gossip and instead speak empowering and uplifting things about the women you know. If you find that you have someone in your life who is a constant gossip and that is the main topic when you get together, then it may be time to give them the axe. Chances are if they are gossiping about others with you, they are probably gossiping about you with others. I don't know about you, but women who speak well of each other are the kind of women I want to surround myself with. We face enough challenges in life, lets empower each other, not tear each other down!

2. The Party Girl. This is the girl who you know you can count on to go out with you on the weekend and have a great time with. Until she blacks out, throws up, loose her purse, starts crying, etc. You can dance together all night, confess secrets in line for the bathroom, talk to cute boys together, but she may just ditch you if she see's a better deal. She is also the kind of friend who will never answer your calls during the week, if you need some moral support or just a night in with a movie and a friend, this is not your girl. She only responds to your texts when Friday night comes along and she doesn't have better plans.

3. The Flake. I think especially in LA flaking has become a part of the culture. You schedule and cancel a lunch 3 times before it actually happens! It can be so frustrating. Of course things come up in life, people get sick, shit happens, but someone who is constantly canceling on you and waiting till an hour before you are supposed to meet up is not respecting your time, or making you a priority. Try and let this person know that it upsets you when they do this and makes you feel unimportant to them. In my younger years I used to overcommit and never say "no" to plans, which lead me to constantly flaking because I just couldn't keep up. A good rule to live by with making plans is, only say "yes" to plans you actually want to keep. Don't commit to things out of obligation if you know you aren't going to be able to follow through.

4. The Emotional Dumper. They will constantly call and text with their drama and expect you to listen and give advice, without returning the favor when you are in need. A friendship is a 2 way street. Both friends need to listen, support, and be there for one another. If someone is using you as their emotional dumpster and never being there in support of you, it may be time to bail.

5. The Negative Nancy. Negativity can suck up all the air and energy in a room. Don't let a friend who is constantly negative, complaining, and unhappy suck up all your joy. You are allowed to be happy and enjoy life, don't let anyone make you feel otherwise. This doesn't mean you can't be there for friends who are going through a tough/dark times. I have known people who have gone through heartbreaking things, but they still remain positive and optimistic for their future, and do not let the negativity overtake them. Surround yourself with positive people who enjoy life.

I want to make it clear that NO ONE IS PERFECT, not at all. It's finding the imperfect people who complement our imperfectness that makes friendships and all relationships more meaningful. Just make sure your not spending your precious time and energy on the wrong people.

Black n' Chambray

Sometimes it's nice to just keep your look simple, classic, and comfortable, but that does not mean you can't still look chic. One of my favorite pairings recently is this chambray shirt with black skinny jeans, and an easy way to take this simple look and elevate it, is adding a stellar pair of heels.

How To Beat Your Hangover

Hide your hangover

Most of us 20-somethings have all been there. You've accidentally had one too many last night and you have woken up with a gnarly hangover and 45 minutes until you need to be at work!! Do not fear, you are not alone, and we have some tips to help you hide that hangover.

1. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE. First things first, alcohol dehydrates you so you need to replenish your body and your skin. You want to replenish your skin first thing, so you don't look tired or god forbid you try and rock last nights makeup. Wash your face with an energizing scrub, then do a 5 minute hydrating skin mask while you get dressed and brush your teeth. My go to hydrating mask is Glamglow Thirsty Mud. Next, you need to hydrate your body. One of the most hydrating things you can drink is coconut water. So head to the nearest connivance store and guzzle as much as you can. Also, a drop of liquid vitamin b12 (available at any health store) under your tongue for 30 seconds in the morning is a great natural way to give yourself a much needed boost of energy, and will instantly make you feel better.

2. Conceal. Dark circles and puffy eyes are a dead giveaway for a late night out. Use a concealer under your eyes and try a nude colored eyeliner on the inner rim of your eyes. This will make your eyes pop and look a bit less tired. Make sure to stay away from dark eyeshadows around your eyes, you want them to look bright and awake.

3. Dress better than you feel. One of the best pieces of advise I have heard is to dress better than you feel. If your hungover, tired, and feeling like crap then it is especially important to dress for success and give yourself that little boost of confidence you need to make it through the work day. A killer outfit will make you feel one step closer to feeling like your normal self.

4. Sweat it out. If you are not in a race against the clock and you have the extra time in the morning, then get your butt out of bed and hit the pavement. Go on a run, bike ride, or do any type of cardio that will help you sweat out the alcohol. It will be the last thing you want to do, but it will 100% make you feel better after.

5. But First Coffee. While Coffee is dehydrating, as long as you have rehydrated with water or coconut water, then the added kick of caffeine will help you get the boost you need for your day. Actually, you may want to go ahead and get an extra shot of espresso! Also grab some kind of carb at the coffee shop to help soak up the alcohol.

Now get out there and go kick some major ass!! You got this!! :)

Pineapple Daze

I was so excited when My Lucky Soul (inspirational clothing line) approached me and asked me to design a shirt. It was a great way to push myself creatively and I had an absolute blast working on this. So excited to announce it is now on sale at ! I really wanted to design a tank top that would be fun for summer and easy to wear with anything. Cute with cut offs, jeans, or yoga pants, it's so comfy and versatile. I hope you guys like it!!

Summer Street Style

Street Style

One of the best things about summer is the freedom to mix and match different looks, not to mention the sense of excitement one can get from a completely new outfit! Inspired by the street style of Venice, I wanted to match something feminine with something fun. That's why I love this white lace cover-up paired with my favorite turquoise Converse which spoke to me and said "I can get turnt but I'll also be pretty while doing it!".Don't forget if you are enjoying the sun this weekend make sure to pack your emergency bag with: a great SPF moisturizer, lip balm, band aids, and maybe a foreign currency, who knows where this summer could take you!

Legally Blonde and Brunette & Yelp LA Does Vegas at the Aria

We were so honored to be hosted by Yelp LA and the Aria hotel this past weekend for an unforgettable trip. This was one of the most fun trips we have ever been on and by far one of our best Vegas experiences.

Night one was so much fun. We attended a Q&A with the cast of Zarkana with complimentary cocktails and popcorn. We then got to enjoy the show. It was mesmerizing and thrilling, full of amazing acts that took our breathe away.

After the show we headed over to Julian Serrano at the Aria. We ate a wide variety of tapas, drank sangria, and finished the meal with some of the best paella ever. Ashley, who is a vegetarian, was able to enjoy delicious bell peppers stuffed with goat cheese (I had a bite, they were delish!) After dinner we grabbed a few drinks at Vice Versa Patio at Vdara.

Day 2 we were treated to one of the BEST BRUNCH at Bardot . To say we were stuffed after would be an understatement. We ate charcuterie, giant french toast, steak and eggs, & lobster benedict!

Then we chilled at the pool all day. I dropped by the spa/salon for a quick blow out (so worth it.)

That night we headed to dinner at Sage, where we had one of the nicest dinners ever. The dinner consisted of 4 courses from the chef's signature menu, that made every taste bud explode. I had the Vancouver Island Kushi Oysters, Maine Day Boat Scallops, 48 hour beef Belly, and Meyer Lemon Cheesecake. Each course was paired with a hand selected wine. It was a magical dining experience.

After dinner we went to Hakkasan where Calvin Harris was spinning!! This night was like a dream between the epic dinner and bottle service at Hakkasan, we were on cloud 9.

While all these extravagant, generous, amazing treats were incredible, one of the bests parts of this trip were the people we got to spend it with. I tried to sit by new people at every meal and really loved getting to know everyone, the yelp elite group was amazing. If you aren't already using Yelp, I suggest you start using it and apply to become an elite member so you can get to go on amazing trips and events like these.

Thank you again to Yelp, Aria, and Brittany F. (Community Manager for Yelp LA) for making this past weekend a dream come true!

Splash of Sophistication

Here at Legally Blonde and Brunette we will be the first to say we support the gypsy lifestyle. From the wardrobe, to the travels, we applaud these wanderers. However, every girl will learn there comes a moment in her life when even though she might not feel it, she still needs to look "grown up". So this is a post we wanted to dedicate to our fellow working women with a look titled "Splash of Sophistication". We hope this inspires your own look that can take you from a high-end horse race to an important day at the office. Just because you have to look professional doesn't mean color goes out the door, don't be afraid to splash some bold and bright colors in your work wardrobe. Enjoy beauties!
