I am really excited about this months guest writer, as believe it or not, this beauty is my younger sister. While she has spent the past five years traveling the world as a model, she now lives in Croatia with her Croatian fiancé. Between Croatia's breath-taking beaches and historic cities (one of which recently became the back drop of Game of Thrones cough cough Kings Landing) Alyssa wanted to share a few fashion tips and tricks she has learnt from the Dalmatian Coast. Hope you enjoy! xoxo, Legally Blonde and Brunette (Ash)
Dobrodosli u Hrvatsku! (welcome to Croatia)
Over the passed five years I’ve lived and modeled in NYC, LA, Japan, Hong Kong, and throughout Europe and I am telling you, there must be something in the mass amount of coffee you Croats are drinking because this place has a specialized style! A land where ‘culture shock’ is over powered/succeeded by ‘style shock’ like a stiletto hit to the face, it will stun you! The amount of well-dressed women per square meter of this country is astounding.
Symptoms of style shock tend to be a series of questions similar to the following:
- “Oh so pajamas are meant SOLELY for the house here? Got it, note taken. I’ll change out of these for next morning’s coffee.”
-“Heels during the day? Even if you’re over 5’9’’? Interesting okay I can get into that.”
Which is why I have compiled a list of some of my favorite foreigner observations of Croatian style:
Tall Girls rejoice: heels are welcome! And you’re not even that tall here! Not only are heels acceptable for any hour of the day, they are almost expected.
Every visiting foreigner has experienced these side effects, and a year and a half ago, as a sneaker and sweats clad first timer I was bewildered just the same. Croatia being ranked as one of the top ten tallest countries in the world, uncomfortably standing out for being too tall is never an issue.
Always be prepared: you will see someone you know. When leaving the house, and walking around Zagreb you have a 100% chance of running into someone you know. Whether it’s a new friend, a friend of a friend, a friend of a friend of a cousin of his grandmother’s friend; you are going to see someone. No matter the situation or time. Coming back from the gym in the morning, hair as a mess, looking like a bum, certainly NOT planning on seeing anyone? You will run into your boyfriend’s mother’s friend, and she will call your boyfriend’s mother to tell her that she saw you in such a state. Your boyfriend’s mother will call, rather concerned, asking if everything is alright, offering to make you a hair appointment, followed by showing up at the house 30 minutes later with something around the lines of burek, risotto or lamb. Moral of this story: getting caught looking like a bum does have its benefits.
The middle aged demographic of ladies are style queens! By far the most genius dressers I have seen are <50 Why? They are stylish, not fashionable. They have figured out something the younger generations are still working on, personal style. Fashion is easily gained from a magazine glance or a purchase from the latest must have brand but true personal style can only be attained through individuality and confidence, something these women are just dominating at!
So in short Croatia is a country that emphasizes beauty, from the coastline to the island to the people. They understand the grace of embracing natural style while never being afraid to think out of the box; I can’t help but think it must be in the water.
